The Solitary Business of Writing

writing is the loneliest job in the world. There's always that frustrating chasm to bridge between the concept and the writing of it. We're a harassed tribe, we writers.

Fannie Hurst

What do you see when you picture a writer?

It's usually someone sitting alone at their desk in a small room with a tiny window locked away from the world.  With their Muse for company, and happily typing away without a care in the world.

Writing is no longer about just writing, but a host of other important tasks to do during the course of a day.  So yes, isolation and writing do go hand in hand, but a writer may need to take care of clients via video chat, keep up with their accounts, and market their books.

With the technology in the world most of the time is still spent alone in front of a screen, or chatting on the phone to potential clients, which doesn't leave any time to meet with people for some social interaction.

A call might be made to speak or sign books, both of these things are a trial on their own.  Often leaving the author anxious about speaking, or meeting new people.

How Does Working Alone Affect Your Health and Well-Being?

In a nutshell.

"People need people."

Isolation, and being away from people, in general, can lead to mental and physical problems, add to the ageing process, and life can feel really difficult sometimes.  Technology, as we know, has led society to be even more cut off because people are texting and chatting over their mobile phones, or tablets.

The community and social interaction people once had is starting to look like a thing of the past, as more and more people of different ages feel isolated.  Because it's so easy to sit in the comfort of your own home and chat, the need for meeting up starts to feel old-fashioned.

I digress.

Why We Need to Socialise With Each Other

Socialising is a key part to better physical and mental health, and will give your life expectancy a boost.  Without social interaction, talking, laughing, sharing thoughts and feelings with each other, things can feel desperate, because people do need people.

How to Beat Loneliness

If what I've said so far has been really depressing I don't want it to be, there are always things we can do to improve our situation.

Simple Tips to Beat Loneliness

Get Out of the House

Have a walk, go window shopping in your local store, or visit a library.  Anywhere you can think of where people gather.  Buy yourself a coffee and make light conversation with your barista.

Get a Pet

If you're an animal lover, a dog or cat may be the answer.  Dogs need lots of walks and you're sure to bump into dog walkers during the day.

Join Your Local Writing Group

Read newspapers, or find out information in your library, there may be a writing group near you.

Do Your Writing in a Local Coffee Shop or Cafe

Again anywhere you can find people, sit down, and start a conversation.  You might make friends along the way.

Spend Time Your Family

Engage with your family, make meals, converse, we all need more of that.

Share this post with your friends!
