How to Better Yourself and Live a Happy, Healthy Writing Life

Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

Nobody's perfect, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to improve your situation in life.

Throughout the centuries people from all backgrounds, rich and poor have looked into ways of improving or bettering their life.

What Does Better Yourself Mean?

When you better yourself, it simply means that you look at different facets of your life that you want to make a change to.  You can make these changes by improving your personal development, emotional well-being, personal growth and overall character development.

Let's take a look at 14 ways you can make your life better.

1. Find a Mentor or Coach

If you don't like your job or you want a change, find a coach and get the right start and support you need to change your life.

2. Learn to Foster and Develop Your Relationships

Learn how to draw closer to other people, building long lasting relationships that will last a lifetime.

3. Try Volunteering

Offer a little bit of your time for free, it's also a great way of finding a sense of purpose and bringing new people into your life.

4. Don't be a "Yes" Person

Learn to set boundaries.  Instead of saying "yes" to everything just to please those around you.

5. Find the Time to Do What You Love Doing

Your daily activities don't always have to drain your energy, they can also energise you.  Discover what makes you happy and do a lot more of that.

6. Build Your Confidence and Conquer Your Fear

Fear can hold you back in life, learn how to harness and use it to get you to where you want to be.

7. Set Goals for Yourself

Goal setting is good at any age, it also helps you focus on something.

8. Spend More Time Outside

Everybody should make time, even if it's just half an hour, to spend outside in the fresh air no matter what the weather.

9. Be Kind

Smiling can do wonders and can help open to doors to help other people out.

10. Exercise More

Something I couldn't do without is my walking and bodyweight exercise I do five times a week.  Start small and build up if you find it difficult.  Once you start exercising you'll see the difference and how it can make your life better.

11. Drink More Water

Water flushes your body out, and prevents depression and anxiety.

12. Eat Healthy

"You are what you eat" simply means that if you eat healthy, you'll feel healthy and be healthy, if you eat processed food you'll have problems and consequently feel awful.

13. Read More

Reading will expand your mind and your vocabulary.

14. Rest More

We live in a fast, ever changing world that doesn't seem to have time to sleep.  Sleep is important for your health, learn how to slow down and take the time out you need to rest.

Let's take a quick look at some exercises you can do at home.

1. Inchworm

Bend your knees and slowly move forward until your hands hit the floor in a press up position, then slowly bring your body back to a standing position.  I do this exercise regularly and realised it was great for toning arms, abdomen and shoulders.

2. Asian Squat

Some people find this exercise really easy, others, like me, find it really hard.  This has been used by people for centuries, and before chairs were introduced.

To do an Asian Squat follow the steps below:
  • Position yourself with your feet shoulder-width apart, or slightly wider.
  • Flare your toes slightly out.
  • Allow your hips and knees to bend simultaneously and begin lowering towards the ground.
  • To stay in balance and maintain your center, be sure to keep your body weight above the midline of your feet. This will help you avoid rocking backward or forward.
  • Aim to push your body as low as you can while maintaining an upright torso and keeping the weight on your heels – heels stay on the floor.
  • Rest your arms on top of your thighs.
  • Try and relax into the position and hold it for a few minutes.

3.  Straight-Leg Donkey Kick

Directions:
  • Get on all fours, with your hands aligned with your shoulders and your knees aligned with your hips.
  • Keeping your back straight, push your right foot out to the imaginary wall behind you while keeping your leg straight.
  • Your foot should remain flexed (toes pointing down to the floor) throughout. Take care to keep your hips square to the ground. Squeeze your buttocks at the top.
  • Return to the starting position. Repeat for the desired number of reps. Repeat on the other leg.

4. Leg Swings

This is a great dynamic stretch that I do before every workout. It loosens up the hips, hamstrings, and glutes.

Begin with forward leg swings. Find something to hold for balance. Start off swinging your right leg backwards and forwards as high and as far back as you comfortably can. Do 20 swings and then switch legs.

Next are side-to-side swings. Again, find something to hold for balance. Swing your right leg out to the side as high as possible and then in front of you towards your left as far as you can go. Perform 20 swings and then switch legs. Depending on how tight you feel, you may need another set.
