How I Made My First £100 in a Month Selling My Self-Published Books

If the books are selling, the money will follow.

Larry Kirshbaum

I self-published my first nonfiction book in 2015 and have gone on to write 12 books.  It wasn't until 2023, and have done over 100 campaigns of varying lengths.

This isn't about getting rich quickly, but rather, it's about building an income and thriving business as a writer.  Which is an ongoing daily battle in itself,  but that's a different story for another day.
The Advertising Part

Testing Advertising on Amazon and The Fussy Librarian

Amazon Ads

You've probably already read the posts about how Amazon ads is so easy to use and how profitable it can be.  Well, like most people I try most things and test them out myself, and I discovered how awkward and difficult it is to advertise my books through Amazon ads.  Finding the right market was as about impossible as it gets.

If you're just starting out in the world of advertising, you want something simple and straightforward, and Amazon ads is neither.

The Fussy Librarian

Advertising is all about sales, and keeping the steady flow of sales and momentum going each month.  Unfortunately, with The Fussy Librarian you're only allowed to advertise for a day at a time, which makes any campaign short lived, and impossible for any audience to really grow in the long term.

I want to share with you my findings, so far, and hopefully give you the confidence to start your own BookBub campaign.

My Strategy

I Started Small

My first ad campaigns were only a couple of days long.  Always testing, learning, getting to know the system.  You'll discover that the more you test, you discover what works for you, because what works for you may not work for someone else.

I Constantly Tested Everything From Images to Auction Bids

You'll notice the testing of everything a lot in this blog post, but again you need to test everything from your bid to ad image to see where you get the best results.  I realised the simpler the image the more clicks I got, and sales.

This isn't the case for a fiction title, but in the case of nonfiction, I find it works.

The Ups and Downs

Every month you advertise will be different from the one before, if you're using the same advertising campaign.  That's the nature of advertising.  Which is why you need to run continuous campaigns until your clicks start to drop.

Every month of the year is different, for instance months like December and October can be really good earners.

CPM vs. CPC Which One is Best?

My preference is CPC, because I tend to get more clicks.

I leave that one for you to decide.
