1. Les Miserables was a popular read for soldiers during the American Civil War.
2. Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud attended a lecture, given by literary great Mark Twain.
3. George Eliot was the pen name used by author Mary Ann Evans, because men were considered to be better writers than women at the time.
4. J. R. R. Tolkien, author of Lord of the Rings, was a scholar of languages, and worked on the Oxford English Dictionary.
5. Illusionist Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes, had a public friendship. This relationship swiftly ended when Houdini heard that Conan Doyle believed in spiritualism, and thought that Houdini had real magical powers.
6. The first author in history to refuse the Nobel Prize for Literature was Boris Pasternak, author of Dr Zhivago. Awarded the prize in 1958, for fear of him and his family being arrested by the Soviet government. It wasn't until 1989 that his son collected the award for his father.
7. Christopher Lee was the step cousin of James Bond author Ian Fleming.
8. Hans Christian Andersen, always took an emergency coil of rope when he stayed in a hotel.
